El jueves 16 de mayo, en el 80avo aniversario de la introducción de la ley Glass Steagall original por el senador Carter Glass en 1933, el senador Tom Harkin (demócrata por Iowa) introdujo en el Senado el proyecto de ley SB 985 para reinstituir esa misma Ley Bancaria de 1933, conocida como la Glass Steagall.
El hecho de que exista ahora un proyecto en el Senado para restablecer la separación plena entre la banca comercial y todo tipo de actividad especulativa, es un acontecimiento de suma importancia:¡La pelea por la ley Glass Steagall ha pasado a otro nivel!
Esta es quizás la consecuencia más visible de la reciente semana de Acción en Washigton D.C., así como de nuestra movilización internacional para reinstaurar el estándar Glass-Steagall en el sistema bancario, comenzando por EEUU.

También hay que resaltar que la movilización por Glass-Steagall sigue activa en todos los niveles: al tiempo que se presentaba la propuesta SB 985 en el Senado, llegaba a 20 el número de legislaturas estatales de EEUU que han introducido una resolución para exhortar a sus respectivas delegaciones en el Congreso a que apoyen el restablecimiento de la Glass-Steagall. Esta semana se introdujo dicha resolución en las legislaturas de Delaware e Illinois. Además, el Consejo Regional de la Toscana en Italia aprobó una resolución donde se hace un llamado a favor de una "Reforma bancaria y judicial acorde a la Ley Glass-Steagall".

En la Cámara de Representantes, ya la representante Marcy Kaptur (demócrata de Ohio) ha introducido el proyecto HR 129 para restablecer la Glass Steagall. El representante republicano de Carolina del Norte, Walter Jones, fue el copatrocinador inicial y ahora el proyecto cuenta con 62 copatrocinadores.

Lyndon LaRouche felicitó al senador Harkin por presentar el proyecto SB 985 a pesar de la enorme presión en contra de parte de la Casa Blanca de Obama y del propio liderato demócrata en el Senado. "Este es un nuevo acontecimiento importante", declaró LaRouche. "Va a tener un impacto significativo por razones bastante obvias. Se han derrotado todos los esfuerzos para impedir esta acción. Esta es una nueva jugada. Cambió el orden del día. A pesar de todos los esfuerzos para impedir está acción, el senador Harkin ha tomado la iniciativa. Esto no significa una victoria total todavía, pero si muestra que la situación no es tan imposible como había esperado el líder del Senado".
